The story behind this documentary is fascinating.
Several missionaries travel to eastern Ecuador in the 1950s and make contact with the Waodani, a Stone Age tribe.
Five of the missionaries – all men – are brutally murdered by the Waodani.


What happens next is fairly unbelievable: the wives and children of the slain missionaries join the natives and, over time, steer them toward a culture of peace and tolerance. The tribe, with its previous propensity for violence and vendetta, was shrinking rapidly as a result.
Some of the movie drags on, especially the testimonies of people who knew the murdered missionaries. While they may make the victims more human by telling of their sense of humor or other attributes, they do nothing to move the film along.
The film’s score is also distracting. It invades scenes and in some cases draws attention away from the story. If the audience notices the score, that usually means it is wrongly used.

One very interesting part shows one of the Waodani traveling to the United States and experiencing life there. His take on things like airports and supermarkets is as funny as it is revealing.
More of that would have boosted the movie but it is unfortunately short and appears to be almost an afterthought.
Despite its flaws, this film is a testament to human beings’ ability to forgive and change.

Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal is lionized – and rightfully so –in this documentary.
The film follows him from his life in a German concentration camp until his death in 2005.
It shows how relentless he was in tracking down war criminals and how scrupulous he was.


While many jumped on the anti-Kurt Waldheim bandwagon in the 1980s when Waldheim was seeking to be Austria’s president, Wiesenthal refused to implicate him. Wiesenthal did so because, even though Waldheim had been a Nazi soldier during the war, he had no evidence that Waldheim had committed war crimes.
This documentary, which was produced by Moriah Films, the Academy Award-winning media subdivision of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, also reveals when the Nazi hunter was wrong, like when he was convinced that Josef Menegele was still alive in South America even though he was widely believed to be dead. Mengele was a German SS officer and a physician in the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau known as the “Angel of Death” because of his human experiments on camp inmates.
Wiesenthal was also stubborn and refused to leave Austria even when his popularity decreased substantially and his daughter had to be escorted by police to school.

One person interviewed for the film claims that ad hoc war crimes tribunals like the ones for Yugoslavia and Rwanda exist in part because of the groundwork laid by Wiesenthal.
It’s been said many times before but needs to be repeated because there are those on the world stage who still claim otherwise: the Holocaust happened. The work of people like Wiesenthal to track down the perpetrators of genocide should be supported.

History was made tonight.
With screenings in more than 550 cinemas in more than 45 countries, the global premiere of “The Age of Stupid” has made a Guinness world record.
It would appear that this film might pack less of a wallop because of former United States Vice President Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth.”
But that wouldn’t be true.

Pete Postlethwaite does a great job as possibly the last human on earth in 2055 looking back to archival footage in the mid to late 2000s and wondering why humanity continued on its course for self destruction when they all knew climate change would wreak havoc on the world.
Before the documentary/drama began, there was a live feed from the green carpet in New York City where people like director Franny Armstrong and actress Gillian Anderson were interviewed. There was also a song sung by Moby with all of the electrical power created by people riding stationary bikes.
Following the screening there was a live interview with former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan who said that global warming is for much of the world the key to increased poverty.
Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed – who pledged his country will be carbon neutral in 10 years – also spoke about how the sea is rising and forcing people out of their homes and how warmer ocean water has diminished fishing. He also said climate change has been killing reefs which has adversely affected tourism.
There were also live satellite links to the Himalayas where glaciers are receding and to Indonesia where deforestation is a concern. Radiohead’s Thom Yorke also played and sang a haunting tune.

This film makes the viewer aware that United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change will take place in December and that it could – with the vocal support of global citizens – be the turning point for humanity when it comes to climate change. Find the UN website here.

After the fall of Baghdad in 2003, chaos and lawlessness prevailed.
How and why that happened is what this documentary tries – convincingly – to explain.
Through interview after interview, director Charles Ferguson shows how mistakes were made in the highest levels of the United States government.


Former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage, Ambassador Barbara Bodine (in charge of Baghdad during the Spring of 2003), Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson, former chief of staff to Colin Powell, and General Jay Garner (in charge of the occupation of Iraq through May 2003), all recount how key errors resulted in near anarchy.
Perhaps the most damning decision was to disband the Iraqi army. That command left half a million men – armed men – without pay or ways to provide for their families.
It appears that fears of Sunnis and Shiites not being able to serve in the military together were unfounded as Iraq’s army – which had Sunnis and Shiites already – had been a professional force already.
Ferguson hones in on the decisions that were made either without advice from underlings or without consulting them in the first place.

Some staffers called for a much larger United States force in Iraq.
Some say that the Iraqi army could have been used at least temporarily to replace the corrupt Iraqi police force in Baghdad. One key problem: most of the United States troops don’t speak Arabic so policing the streets would be near impossible.
The extra features available on DVD are worth watching to get a better sense of what happened and what went wrong in Iraq.

It took director Tom Peosay 10 years to make this documentary.
The film covers Tibet’s history and focuses mostly on its occupation by China in the last 50 years.
It is clear from the beginning that the makers of this movie side with those calling for a free Tibet. Chinese officials who are interviewed about Tibet come across like cigarette company executives who for years claimed cigarettes were not bad for your health.


According to the film, the Chinese government is trying to assimilate the Tibetan population by sending ethnic Han to the region much in the same way it has done in Xinjiang with the Uygur people.
Some of the more powerful segments of the documentary show people who had been imprisoned for years and the torture devices that were used on them during their incarceration.
“Tibet: Cry of the Snow Lion” also prominently features the Dalai Lama and his presence buoys the film. His call for nonviolent protest against Chinese occupation is powerful and inspiring.

This film reveals the natural beauty of Tibet and the colorful pageantry of Tibetan tradition.
Peosay does a wonderful job of mixing first person testimonials with accounts and analyses of Tibet experts.
The narration and voiceovers are done by such Hollywood stars as Ed Harris, Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon, and Martin Sheen.
While its call for a free Tibet is obvious and heavy handed, this film is worth seeing.

It is no shock that many people try desperately to reach the United States to attain a better quality of life for themselves and their families in their home countries.
This documentary focuses on children who ride atop a train they call “The Beast” in order to reach their “Promised Land.”
Some of the kids profiled are only nine years old and are traveling alone.
The risks are clear: they may be turned back by immigration officials on both sides of the Mexican/American border, abandoned in the desert without enough supplies, or murdered or raped by the smugglers hired to bring them to the United States.


While the children interviewed are street smart, they are still kids and have optimism about how they will better their lives once they reach the United States. It may be that naïve positive outlook that spurs them to undertake such a trip in the first place.
The children are from Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala. They are all trying to escape desperate poverty.
Director Rebecca Cammisa also gives time to the parents of a teen who died in the desert in the American southwest. He was one of the unlucky ones.

The intimate portraits provided by Cammisa are all the more compelling because her characters speak for themselves. She eschews using a narrator which brings the audience closer to the subjects.
While focusing on the here and now, this film is a timeless testament to the indomitableness of the human spirit and the constant search for something better.

This film paints a grim picture of life in Afghanistan.
It starts with Naqshbandi’s relationship with American journalist Christian Parenti. Naqshbandi is also a journalist and is called a “fixer” because he facilitates interviews and translates for foreign journalists.
Naqshbandi is later kidnapped by Taliban forces along with Italian journalist Daniele Mastrogiacomo and a driver. The driver is immediately beheaded.


It is at this point that the film shows the frustration on the part of Naqshbandi’s family who wait in vain for the government of Hamid Karzai to trade prisoners for him.
It is shocking how the Afghan government arranges for the release of Mastrogiacomo but sits on its hands when it comes to Naqshbandi, a native of Afghanistan. Naqshbandi’s father, who is shown prominently in the film, wonders why his government pushed so strongly for the release of a foreigner but refused to negotiate with the Taliban for his son’s freedom.
This movie is similar to “A Mighty Heart,” which was released in 2007. In that film, the wife of journalist Daniel Pearl desperately seeks him out when he is kidnapped in Pakistan in 2002.
Naqshbandi’s father has lost faith in his government which is apparently riddled with corruption and says the Taliban is not truly Muslim but “savages.”

“Fixer: The Taking of Ajmal Naqshbandi” shows how little control the central government has in the provinces and how strong the Taliban is in Afghanistan.
This film is one more bleak chapter in Afghanistan’s history.
“Fixer: The Taking of Ajmal Naqshbandi” is now being shown on HBO.

Maybe you have to be Romanian to get this movie.
A comedy, it focuses on two men who claim they were part of the revolution that brought down Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu in December 1989.

While being interviewed by a local TV personality, the pair face callers who claim they were in the public square on that date (December 22, 1989) and that they did not see the two show’s guests.
Some of the humor is overt and can elicit a smile or two but by and large it is subdued. It is so understated in fact that it is not funny at all.
It is hard for the audience to sympathize with the two main characters, an old man and an alcoholic history teacher.
There is a smattering of humor in the calls taken by the TV show, with callers swearing and vehemently denying that the two men were where they claimed to be.
The question from the TV show host is, then, if people in their village took to the streets after Ceausescu had already left, were they really part of the revolution?

Maybe it’s because it is eastern European that the film is darker than it is funny.
There is a defeated air about all of the main characters, a sense of weary cynicism.
This film (director Corneliu Porumboiu’s first feature) is sad and slow but thoughtful.

This is a rare glimpse into the life of North Korea.
The report comes from journalist Lisa Ling, whose sister, Laura Ling, was recently released from prison there during a visit from former United States President Bill Clinton.
Lisa Ling and her crew obtained access to the sealed country by following a Nepalese eye surgeon and pretending to be part of his crew documenting his experience.

It is almost surreal that North Koreans are slavishly devoted to “Great Leader” Kim Jong Il despite the hardships they endure.
The country has faced famine and still deals with malnutrition while Kim lives the high life.
In one of the documentary’s strangest moments, dozens of people who had been blind from cataracts kneel to and praise Kim once their bandages are off and they can see again.
And, Lisa Ling notes, it is difficult to determine the true faithful from the fearful and that more than 50 years of indoctrination has blurred that line significantly.
Kim’s cult of personality is so deep that he pervades every aspect of the average North Korean’s life.
The documentary shows interviews with several people, some of whom are defectors to the west.
One of those people used to be a prison guard and tells how, while being trained as a guard, he was instructed to regard prisoners as subhuman. He also said that North Korea would collapse if the many work camps there were to close.

As Lisa Ling says, this communist country would probably simply be a small anomaly except for the fact that it has nuclear weapons.
This is an interesting glimpse into probably the most insular nation in the world.
